Well, today is the last day of March. Have you seen the meme that March came in like a lion and out like a T-Rex? Isn’t that the truth? Tomorrow is April 1. We heard that we will continue to socially distance ourselves until the end of April.

Again, if all we are is stuck at home then we have a lot to be thankful for.

I think bloggers are in quite the predicament as to what to write about. For many, this is their living and it is already at stake. But, it seems irresponsible to tell people to go spend money right now on luxuries. Cooking and frugality blogs have a good audience right now talking about pantry staples and budget meals at home. Design blogs can talk about rearranging your nest and making your home an oasis right now.

My strategy right now is to try to find ways to help people who may come across my blog. I like fashion, cooking and creating recipes, drinking coffee, drinking cocktails, reading, watching t.v., being outside in nature, but I am not an expert in anything really.

I am going to try to take it one week at a time, one day at a time, and even one hour at a time. There may come a point when I need to step away from blogging. For now, this is a healthy outlet for me and if I help even one person, I will be happy.

Tip: Celebrate the obscure holidays that you wouldn’t usually have time for!

April 1: April Fool’s Day!

This is tomorrow and this would be great fun for the kids. Google ideas but think about the people in your household. What are their routines and what could be funny but not harmful? You also ask older kids to google the origins of the day.

I have a great memory from childhood where my mom came up with the idea to switch the sugar in the sugarbowl to salt to trick my Dad when he came down to drink his coffee. My two little sisters and I were involved in the process and we thought it was hilarious.

I have a feeling that when we get through this, your children will remember the happy feelings of being home together and the fun moments and memories that you were able to create.

-Switch out the sugar for salt

-Open a pack of Oreos and change out the filling in the first couple of cookies to toothpaste

-Change out their favorite chip or treat to something else (don’t waste the treat of course – just put elsewhere)

All of these are innocent and wouldn’t result in any harm – or much waste!

Some upcoming obscure holidays:

April 2- Peanut Butter and Jelly Day – Make sandwiches and look up songs about this combo

April 7 – NO housework day

April 10 -National Siblings Day

April 13 – Scrabble Day

April 22 – Jelly Bean Day (get some off clearance from Easter – maybe create art with jelly beans)

April 26 – Pretzel Day (try to make your own soft pretzels?)

April 24 – Arbor Day – plant a new tree

I think you could pick a few of these and have some fun!

Goop Recipe

You may just have these things on hand:

1 cup cornstarch

1 cup water

food coloring (it will stain hands so feel free to leave it out)

You can’t really make anything with this but it has a cool texture and you can squeeze, pull, etc. and it would be fun for kids! I made this with my boys when they were little.

  1. Totally marking my calendar for April 7 – no housework day! Woo hoo!
Blogging is quite the predicament now, isn’t it? Who feels like shopping and how many times can we hear that giving ourselves a facial is a good way to practice self care? I’m not really sure what to write about but I have at least a few things to say so we’ll see where that ends.
    Have a good day Amy!

    1. Me too! That will be my favorite! Blogging is challenging! I just want to hear what everyone is doing, what they’re cooking, I guess – I think I’m enjoying the journaling type posts right now.

  2. I love this idea! Especially PB & J day 🙂 I have memories of when I was in elementary school …on Arbor Day, we received seedling trees to plant in our backyards. I remember being so excited to plant them

  4. Hi, how are you holding up!? Thanks for blogging, you can never be boring!
Big news today is that the supermarket had filled the shelves with toilet paper, woho! We are also continuing the social distancing, but hey, I’m in school every day! I meet a bunch of kids and colleagues every day, so I really don’t bother with wiping off the food I buy in the store… Life goes on, me and husband went to a coffee shop after work, and tomorrow I have a doctor’s appointment. But… we are making new plans for summer, I really can’t imagine you will open your borders for a couple of months.
Swedish hospitals are doing fine, but there are sad stories on the news every day… What a catastrophy!

    1. You’re too kind. I’m feeling pretty melancholy. I miss life as I knew it. I miss my students. I’m getting scared. Virginia just said that they will continue to shelter in place until June 10! I hope that isn’t needed! I hate to say that I’m afraid you won’t be able to or even want to travel here. I’m glad you found toilet paper. Our stores seem normalish now?
I watched too much news today. I’m surprised your coffee shops are open? Take care my Swedish friend!

      1. I just heard your president talking about “two tough weeks and then we’ll see the light in the tunnel”, but I wonder… I suspect we’ll spend the summer here, and if we’re lucky we might go down to the south of Europe to get some hot sun – I crave it you know!
Restaurants and coffee shops are open, but bar serving is not allowed. It’s spooky to see the big office buildings absolutely empty…
I look forward to be off from school next week, and I hope my hairstylist will keep my appointment on Friday (shallow I know, but I really need a haircut).

      2. I think we will keep saying two more weeks for awhile, unfortunately. I hope you get hair done – ours closed 3 weeks ago! We were quite aggressive in Kentucky and our governor is getting national praise! I love him and he cares about teachers so the teachers helped to vote him in office! Have a great day!

  5. I know what you mean about the blogs. I usually love the fashion / shopping posts but it’s kind of off-putting right now. I do understand it’s their income, I’ll just come back to them when I’m less stressed and feeling lighter. You do a good job mixing it up. If nothing else, you can teach us a new cocktail everyday because Lord knows we need it!

    1. I know! It seems really tone deaf to overtly try to get us to buy stuff – even the ones disguised as lounge wear or athleisure. This may end up worse economically than 2008. I am turning more to my frugal and simple living blogs to be honest. I am trying to focus on recipes and chatty type posts but even then I feel privileged to be able to buy food and just be staying at home, you know? Thank you so much for commenting and giving me feedback and you’re so right – I think we all need a cocktail every now and then!
