Have you heard of “dirty” soda? The term was coined from the “dirty martini” and it was intended to be a fun non-alcoholic beverage. It is attributed to the Mormon founder of Swig which is a dirty soda shop. If you have watched Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, these chicks are never without their giant dirty sodas that they mainline all day long.

My friend drives around the city for work and was telling me about the Swig drink she gets when she is near our only location in Louisville so far. Maria discovered the dirty soda and has a cute little shop near her. I have noticed some people making “dirty soda bars” at parties and providing “recipes” for one or more drinks, too.

I think a tween or a teen girl would really get into these drinks but I would probably just call them “summer sodas”.

My friend told me the drink she likes is Diet Dr. Pepper, lime juice, vanilla syrup, and cream.

I already had everything but the Diet Dr. Pepper. I first used the coconut creamer, but then preferred the sweet cream flavor. I did a splash of lime, a splash of vanilla, added ice, poured in the soda, and topped with maybe 1/4-1/2 cup creamer so it was quite a bit.

It turned out foamy and bubbly and it reminded me of a root beer float.

Have you tried one?

I honestly don’t know of a place near me to get one so I had to make my own!

Amy

    1. I don’t generally want to drink my calories unless it’s a cocktail but I can see how this could be a good treat! You should try it once and see? I will if I’m ever near it.

  1. Oh man, I need to get back to Utah if just for the dirty soda places, lol. It’s interesting- the place I go to most- Fizzy’s- they don’t put cream in their dirty sodas. They just use those Torani brand syrups. So maybe they technically aren’t dirty sodas? There’s a coffee shop in a small town near us that makes dirty sodas and they do put cream in theirs. I love that you made one!! I, too, have noticed a trend at get togethers/parties, to have a dirty soda or at least flavored soda bar. So fun! I think as people want non alcoholic drink options for whatever reason, having neat choices for soft drinks is a good idea. Plus they’re delicious :).

    1. I think you should make your own! I also think you need a good non-alch option for any gatherings. I have been making mocktails for my nieces and nephews for a long time. I always name them. They love “purple rain” which is grape Crystal Light, grape juice, and Sprite. I always had Shirley Temples at Christmas for them, too. I have made mermaid juice and holiday ones like Rudolph named thing. The cream is what makes it foamy and more like a float so I am surprised they don’t add that.

  2. I tried one for the first time two weekends ago; I was grocery shopping one day and there was a Dirty Girl (dirty soda drink) truck outside of my Walmart. I stopped and got the Diet Dr. Pepper dirty soda, which was exactly like this one you made. I didn’t like it, honestly. I drank it all, since it was expensive and I didn’t want to waste the money I’d just spent ($9!), but I don’t plan on getting it again. I think the surprising thing was that the cream and lime juice took away a lot of the sharp carbonation that I love. I’d been wanting to try one, so I’m glad I tried it that day…you never know unless you try it, right?

  3. Hi Amy!
I couldn’t drink one of these if I tried, but one of friends swears by a McDonald’s Hi-C orange with a few cups of the coffee creamer they provide and drinks this a couple times a week. She says it tastes just like a creamsicle!
    Cheers Missy

  4. There was a YouTuber I liked years ago who would make dirty sodas. I made them for awhile but gave up sodas a few years ago except the occasional one on a weekend. They are yum!! 😋

  5. I have heard of dirty sodas but have never had one! At the moment they are not a big thing over here which seems like a real shame. We don’t even get all the amazing coffee creamers that you have!

  6. Our PTO brought in a bunch of choices to make our own for Teacher Appreciation Day. I had not had one before that but it was a lot of fun. I had Diet Pepsi, vanilla and a bit of cream with ice. It was great and I was pleasantly surprised. They had all kinds of recipes you could make. It was fun.

  7. I am not a fan of the dirty soda trend, far too sweet for me. Plus I’d rather eat my calories than drink them, haha!

  8. Yes! We had a dirty soda bar at Diana’s graduation party- we had different sodas like Coke, Diet Coke, Root Beer, Orange Soda and Grape Soda. Then we had four different flavored syrups to choose from like Raspberry, Coconut, Strawberry and Peach and then two different flavored creamers- Vanilla and Coconut. It was a hit for sure!

  9. I was on a dirty soda KICK last summer and will have to rediscover them. I varied mine but the formula was super simple: Coke Zero and whatever coffee creamer I had in the fridge at the time, maybe a splash of Torani syrup (and I had 3 or 4 flavors). To me, it tastes like a coke float when the ice cream melts – YUM.

    1. I don’t want to drink soda so I am ok with not going crazy. That is super easy and gets the same effect. I don’t really like the lime or think it adds.
      Exactly!

  10. Almost every time we come to Louisville, we go to Swig. Lol
One of Hadley’s friends had a “dirty soda” option at her 16th bday party. Chick fila has a similar option now. Sonic too. Swig is the best tho (or homemade)
