Wow! May is really chugging right along, isn’t it?

Do you ever feel like your life is really basic, really boring, really average? I had the thought that several little things I do make me really happy because they feel a little “fancy”. I have always liked that word. I don’t think it’s used enough anymore! Right?

I am not ashamed to say that I love glassware. I like certain glasses due to their look, their heft, their size. I will definitely judge a restaurant on their drinking vessels! I do not want to drink from styrofoam (unless it’s cute on very rare occasion), or plastic, or old red Pizza Hut cups that I had to wash by hand on a weird cup washer device.

I put my water in a wine glass sometimes and it feels fancy. I don’t love a slice of fruit in my water but that’s even fancier.

I was a big dill buying fresh herbs. Fresh herbs feel a little fancy.

I put some in my eggs.

I like my croissant spoon rest. It feels a little fancy.

I put my food on a real plate. These are our wedding china plates. We didn’t go super formal but I still love this simple design and the color yellow.

Fresh flowers feel a little fancy.

Walking my dog feels fancy some days if I imagine I’m in another country.

Breakfast out feels fancy to me.

Sometimes taking a drink with me to a hair appointment or to run errands makes it feel like more of an outing. I love my glass iced coffee cup but I also do like these plastic to go cups I bought and the TJ Maxx disposable coffee cups I bought in January (I looked back) that I use on rare occasion. On my last hair appointment, I made a drink to take and it really did add to my enjoyment of getting a beauty service done. I felt fancy.

Fiona Ferris books make you think of how to eek the most out of your life.

If I like how a product smells, I will clean more! I feel a little fancy using this cleaner and it makes me happy.

Sitting on a patio feels fancy. I have started a “patios I want to visit” list.

Getting dressed feels fancy. I loved this recent IG post.

I feel like putting on an “outfit” can help your enjoyment of what could have just been an errand. Looking at my errands as an outing or an adventure is fun for me.

The youths are talking about “side quests” and “microadventures”:

When they use these terms, I think they are just saying to look for a little fun in your average, ordinary days and weeks.

Reading a magazine feels fancy to me.

Adding a piece of jewelry or pair of shoes with my outfit can feel really nice and fancy, I think. I have a ring that I love that adds some bling and my gold kitten heels feel real fancy!

What is something fancy that you do or could do?

Amy

  1. It’s a topic that I have not thought about, honestly! I guess I’d say wearing a pair of cute earrings, bothering to refresh my lipstick when out and about, and decanting ordinary items into prettier containers are a few things I can think of off the top of my head at 4:50 am, lol. I think it’s great that you’ve come up with a nice list of things!

  2. I am with you on the glassware and I like fancy too. I am not a fan of a styrofoam cup. My hubs family when I first met him, had a huge number of what I call stadium cups-plastic and most from ballgames I guess. They all LOVED them. I’d add cloth napkins to the list. Lit candles during a bath. Ice cubes made with berries or maybe some rosemary in them. Tea served from a pretty teapot and slowing down to drink it. I think not hurrying feels fancy in a way.

    1. Cloth napkins! How could I forget? We use them! Yes, to candles. I haven’t done that much with ice cubes because I don’t have the old-fashioned trays. I will put that on my goals list for cocktails.
I am experiencing an unhurried lifestyle for the first time and it’s so wonderful.

  3. I was thinking about Fiona Farris when you mentioned some of these ideas! I’m with you…I love a good drinking glass. I have started buying them in pears and using them specifically for different “couple strengths” with my husband at night on the deck. I might consider “taking a fancy drink“ to my next hair or nail appointment – that sounds nice 🙂

I think having my nails done is “fancy“. Life really is better when you look up, look around, and try something new!

Taking the drink to my last appointment really felt nice!
Yes to the nails – still trying to repair mine and figure out my next move. Lol.

    1. Clothes are a big part! The new Erin Walsh book “The Art of Intentional Dressing” says that you should simply ask yourself how you want to feel that day as you get dressed.

  4. I love every bit of this post! I often use the word luxurious…some of what I do feels like that. I think this also goes well with romanticizing your life…some things I do are that I always use real plates and drink ware, I wash my face every single night, I use good shampoo and conditioner, I slather body butter on everyday before I get dressed (I missed this yesterday and I could tell the difference), I lounge in my bed sometimes, and I eat what and wherever I want. Those are just a few things, but I could go on. Thanks for sharing this!

    1. You are so good at luxury/fancy! I think good smells are so important to me. I have a new face wash that I love – Vanicream brand. The things you are describing are definitely luxury! Now, you get to craft what luxury means in the summer to you! Part of that, hopefully, will be slowing down a little bit from the school year.

  5. I bookmarked that micro-adventures thing when I saw it on Insta. Then I promptly bought myself some Nutella cookies which are amazing AND look fancy. I like to think of some of that as little treats for your soul. I took a calligraphy class last night so now I can start writing all fancy, ha ha.

  6. This post did make me smile and I was nodding along. I bought some new glass mugs this week and they feel so fancy and I agree fresh herbs makes anything fancy! Anytime I buy a coffee when I am out I feel fancy and that Method spray is very fancy! I am loving the orange one at the moment.
