It’s Wednesday which means Hodgepodge with Joyce!

1. What’s one piece of advice you would you give a recent or soon-to-be graduate?

You don’t have it all figured out and you don’t have to. Be open to opportunities and the lessons you will learn. I had a goal to leave the country at least once a year and did that from age 21 until age 28. I was single for much of this time, and it allowed me to see what I wanted for my future and to figure out how to support myself. That gave me loads of confidence.

When I look at my young face I think of all the things I am going to experience. Learn from the people around you and the lessons you are being taught. Accept help. I remember veteran teachers that were so kind to me. I didn’t have a classroom for my first 3 years, and a veteran English teacher let me use their computer and grade recording program.

The young face below would start her high school Spanish teacher career in just three months but first she got an opportunity to chaperone a mission trip to Mexico for two weeks for basically free! While in Mexico, my mom accepted a job interview for me and that’s the job I got and where I stayed for four years. I tried to stay with my college boyfriend who was still in college, but our lives became very different and we broke up.

Here I am with my college and beyond roommate Heather. We had an outdoor ceremony, and it started raining so we had to run in the chapel to finish! We lived in two different apartments together after graduation for 4 years! It really was our Friends era. We watched the show and had lots of other friends in apartments and would hang out at ours or theirs. She started dating her husband who was friends with my husband and that’s how we met!

My kids in their college graduation regalia – they didn’t get a high school graduation because the year was 2020.

2. May 15th marks the birth date of L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. At this point in time are you more in need of brains, courage, heart, or a trip back home? Explain.

I think I need a trip back home.

My hometown is really special to me. I am doing my best to keep those ties without a parent or a home base there anymore.

After going there so much for the packing and preparing to sell of my mom’s house from January 2025 until June 2025…

I had the best time in September with Tom for a music festival and have already booked our hotel for this year – still need to buy our tickets. The house still wasn’t sold at this time and we did go there to check on it but we finally got to go just for fun in September.

Molly and I made a fun day out of the closing of our mom’s house in November. After shedding our tears, we did a comical wine tasting and enjoyed the Christmas decorations…

and in December the whole fam had so much fun there together – we played games, ate, laughed, and bowled.

But, Monday night I watched as this unfolded…

My church since I was five years old where I spent to much of my childhood and youth, where I got married, where Kate and Molly got married, where we had my parents’ funerals… caught on fire.

My heart hurts. As I type this, I don’t know the extent of the damage.

3.  “There’s no place like home” is an oft repeated line from Baum’s book. When was the last time you felt the truth of that statement?

Every time I travel, I am so happy to come back home. My house is far from perfect, but it’s mine and I feel happy and contented here. Even though my hometown is super special to me, my adopted city where I live now is super special to me, too.

4. May is National BBQ Month…do you own a grill? Who does the grilling at your house? What’s your favorite thing to throw on the grill? What’s the last thing you grilled?

We still have not replaced our grill! Tom is not blessed with the grilling gene, the desire to grill, or is he home early enough during the week to get the grilling done for when we like to eat. So, we will maybe get a grill this year when they have some sales? Any grill recommendations out there?

5. What’s a memory you replay in your head when you need a little joy?

Gosh, this is a hard one. Laughing with my little family of four, my extended family, or friends probably.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I read this book a few years ago but like with many books, I had forgotten all the details. No one was more surprised than I was that I liked a book that involved an octopus.

I started the movie on Netflix this past weekend and wasn’t sure I could do it because again, the octopus, the fear of it being too sad, etc. Watch this and stick with it. It is so well done. I also think you could tie in the themes of home and community, being open to learning and opportunities, and so much more that is relevant to today’s Hodgepodge themes.

Watch it!

Amy

  1. I hope the church wasn’t destroyed by the fire. It’s so hard to see (whether in pictures or real life) a building that has meaning to you burning with fire. On to more pleasant topics, I like what you said in response to the first question. So true! Great throwback pictures- it’s so sad your boys missed their high school graduation but at least they had their college graduation. And how fun for you to have a Friends like time after college! I sort of did having gone back to school (law school) after college when that show was popular. Lots of good times with friends/roommates but it was tinged with knowing we had lots of studying to do!

  2. Oh that is so sad about your hometown church! I immediately went into grad school from college so it was really just more of the same for me after graduation and by the time I graduated grad school I was already married and a home owner. I definitely felt like there is not place like home when we arrived back home Saturday night. I loved our trip but nothing compares to home.

  3. I loved reading more about your post grad years; some I knew, some I didn’t. I also loved seeing those younger pics of you! The year 2020 was so sad, regarding graduations; we still had them here, but they were done individually in ten minute slots, spread over several days. It was so sad, but at least they all had something, right?

That movie was stunning. I loved it so much.

  4. I am glad the kids at least could celebrate college graduation- still get so sad and angry about the C word- ugh. Anyway, you should get a grill this summer- don’t recommend any one brand over another but recommend it for the summer so you don’t have to cook inside as much!

  5. Oh how sad about the church. I hope it can be repaired. I’m with Holly when it comes to the c-word. Grrrr… I haven’t been back to my childhood town since we sold my mom’s house. I am now sure I want to but I do cherish my wonderful memories of growing up there. My brother lives just a town or two over from there so it’s possible we’ll get that one someday. We’ve moved a lot and when I move (no matter how I felt about the move) I declare it home from day one. It helps a lot. I think my girls have done the same. Love the throwback pics! I honestly don’t have tons of pics of me in college. We didn’t take pictures like the whole world does now, but I might go dig some up. Have a great day!

  6. Oh, I hope the damage to the church can be rebuilt and what a hard thing for your community. Any idea of how it started? I am glad you are still staying connected to your hometown. I love your own Friends era. I loved living in my own place as a young adult between college and marriage. It was our Friends/Seinfeld time of life.

  7. I’m almost to the end of that movie! Cheesy but BEAUTIFUL story. I just love Sally Field.

I really enjoyed your answers and getting to “know” you. I’m so sorry about your church…that is just horrible. Do they know how it began? hopefully no one was hurt.

I loved living on my own between grad school and marriage…..just loved it. Although I also love being married πŸ™‚

    happy wednesday!

  8. I hope your church sustained only a little damage. That’s so hard to watch. I loved your words of advice. You’ve got an old soul. We bought a Blackstone and liked it a lot. When Mike couldn’t stand up in order to use it, we gave it to our son because it was huge. I bought a nice little one that didn’t scare me. So, I would go with a smaller one rather than big unless you’d be entertaining a lot. Home is really the best, isn’t it?

  9. What fantastic advice for the first question! It is so important to learn from the people around you. Oh no! That is really sad about the church. I watched Remarkably Bright Creatures over the weekend and I loved it. I hadn’t read the book so had no idea what was coming and it was sad but so heart warming and sweet at the same time.

  10. Just got home last night from leaving my middle kiddo in Naples Florida for her new job. Naples is absolutely beautiful but expensive! I feel so bad for the covid generation kids. My youngest daughter got a graduation but not a prom. I think their first class reunion should have a prom night! I hope your church didn’t suffer irreparable damage. 😞 It looks like such a cute church!

  11. I was so sad to see the news about the fire at the church. I hope they will be able to save some of the building. I also loved RBC and thought they did a great job putting it on screen. Your advice for grads is so good. I wish I would have known some of those things back in my 20’s!

  12. Hi Amy!
The best thing I was told at college age….I didn’t go but,

1 . Have your own money!

    2. Have older women friends!
Both of those have been very good for me and other people I have since told. I didn’t like my hometown I’m glad I got out of there and my mom moved with me after my dad passed away.

    Cheers!

  13. I enjoyed all your answers. My youngest daughter who is 27 and still single has done a lot of traveling and we encourage it. I am planning to watch that movie next week. I read the book too

  14. I’m so sorry about the fire at your church – I hope no one was hurt and that the building can be saved. So sad when historic buildings are damaged, especially when they have such meaning.

So glad you shared your thoughts on Remarkably Bright Creatures – I adored the book, much to my surprise, so I’ve wanted to watch the show but had the same reservations you mentioned. I feel more confident in sitting down to watch now. πŸ™‚

Hope you’re having a great week!
