It’s Monday and it’s the last week before Spring Break for me! I am linking up with Sarah and Holly to share my weekend.

Let’s go back to Thursday. Have you made any new friends lately? It’s pretty hard in your 50s, no? Well, I have always talked and been friendly with my principal’s administrative assistant. I taught one of her kids before she worked at my school and she is maybe a year or two older than me. She keeps my school running and she has great style. Well, we talked about doing a happy hour and adding in her neighbor who I also kind of know. I also taught one of her kids. We made it happen on Thursday night.

We went to Steak and Bourbon for their 5-7 happy hour and I was a little nervous just since I didn’t know the other lady very well.

We had the butter candle, of course! We spent two hours chatting and there wasn’t an awkward moment. It’s daunting to take an acquaintance to the next level, though.

Friday was an easy day at school because all the juniors were involved in a junior ring ceremony and then they could sign out.

I came home, rested, and then did a big breakfast for dinner that included grits. Tom loves grits and almost always complains about restaurant grits. He doesn’t want cheese. He’s a grits purist.

I watched – don’t judge – Farmer Wants a Wife Friday night. Lol. It made me chuckle.

Saturday morning – my favorite day of the week! Ahhhhhh – I move slowly, piddle around, and just see where the wind takes me most Saturday mornings. I have been going to get a spray tan around 10 or 11 after I shower. I get medium clear and this time I remembered to cover my face. I ask for another hair net. I think the tan face brings out my melasma and doesn’t look good. Pretty scary!

I did a Kroger pick up. I have been doing them like two times a week. I just can’t get all my shizz together for a whole week.

Then, Tom and I went to a couples baby shower for my co-worker. She taught my kids Spanish 2, also! So, we have worked together for a long time. She looked gorgeous and the cake was amazing.

I had some time on the sunny patio and I am reading this Nicholas Sparks and it sucked me in. I haven’t read one of his in a while. The man can write a story.

Someone asked what devotional book I am reading right now. I found this brand new on a shelf at my mom’s house. My last devotional book made me mad at something I took as extremely chauvinistic. It makes me happy to use something of my mom’s anyway.

Sunday morning was cold but I braved it anyway…

I did my Easter decor and started gumbo. I got the recipe my French teacher colleague gave me and it turned out perfect to simmer on a rainy Sunday.

We went to a classical guitar recital of Jack’s teacher as a family. All four of us in one car!

We came home and I made this to go with the gumbo:

I read a bit more and then I thought I needed to get out before my Sunday ended. I got gas, cash, and went to the mall. Anthro has lots of lemon stuff.

And that’s a wrap!

What was the highlight of your weekend? I hope you had a good one!

  1. That sounds like a lovely weekend. Good for you for stepping outside your comfort zone and meeting someone new! That is a beautiful baby shower cake.

  2. That baby shower looks nice- that cake! So pretty. I hope you like the Billy Graham devo. I’m not familiar with that one but I don’t think you can go wrong with Bill Graham. It is strange when the five of us are in one car. It doesn’t happen much at all at this stage/age of our lives!

    1. That cake was like 10 layers and they had to cut each tall piece in half. I like the devo. It is simple and to the point. I’m liking it much better than my old one which was highly recommended. I just didn’t connect. I can’t remember what it was called but it was teal and red.

  3. My tanning salon has the plastic hair nets in the room and I always put one over my face – so I laughed when I saw your picture! I feel silly when I do it but it works so well. It also sort of makes me feel like I can’t breathe and I have imagined passing out and how embarrassing that would be!

Your HH sounds like fun and yay for new friends! It might be a little harder in our 50s but I also think we have the opportunity to find friends we have more in common with. When we’re younger we usually have our kids and their activities in common but now it’s other stuff!

  4. Butter and bread seems to calm any circumstance, ha! I watched Farmer Wants a Wife too! I hope it is a good season. I just introduced Jenn to this show. Cooking gumbo is a dedication, but it is so good! Happy Monday friend!

  5. I need to get out the Easter decor. I suppose I still have a month!

I did make a new friend last summer and we see each other at least once a month…I don’t think it’s ever easy once you get past college lol. I think age hampers it too. Like, we both have toddlers but she’s 10 years younger than me.

I’m always confused by grits. I think they should taste sweet? The first time I ever had them was in Louisville!

  6. That butter candle has me so intrigued! Definately hard to make friends in your 50’s so I’m super happy you did this! Yum! Now I want to make beer bread again! Happy fresh, new week!

  8. Hi!

Cute Mom towel! I’m sure it made you think of your Mom!

We went with another couple to a very fancy Italian restaurant in downtown Chicago. It was awful and $300! It was so bad! I hate when that happens.

Boring rain filled Sunday, my husband watched NCAA Basketball ALL weekend.

    Cheers.

  9. Good for you for reaching out and making new friends. We moved to a new state and town in our 50’s so we’ve made a lot of new friends in the last few years. It’s been fun, but you definitely have to put yourself out there. My hubs never met a stranger which helps. The lake is it’s own entity and everyone is pretty much looking for friends and open to new people so that helps. When we moved back to NJ from the UK (in my late 40’s) it was much more challenging to connect with women as most people had lived there forever and had all the friends they needed, so to speak. It took time but we got there. I never tire of the lemon decor. Your gumbo sounds good. I haven’t made that in ages so might have to dig out my recipe. My hubs is a grits purist too lol. Have a great day!

  10. It really is hard to meet new people at a certain age. I’m glad you made two new friends…happy hour would be a good way to do it. Gosh, I love real grits! I’ve never tried making them, though. I led a mini retreat at my church this weekend. I’m glad it’s over, but that just means it’s time to start writing the next one! Have a fast week!

  11. Loved reading this and can totally relate to making friends at our age- love to do it but it is uncomfortable and often times, not easy- keep at it- you must be a blast to go out with 🙂

  12. I have found the older I get the harder it is to make friends! How lovely to have a get together on Thursday evening.
I love the sound of your Saturday mornings and your patio looks a lovely place to enjoy the sunshine.

  13. I agree that it is really hard to meet friends in this stage of life. I still have all my “old” friends, but so many of them are now in completely different phases of life now. I’m hopeful that the new Sunday School class at church will bring some new friends. I loved hearing about your weekend. I can’t wait to explore Louisville!

    1. I hope so, too! I feel that I am always open to make new friends but so many are already established.
I have had a couple of people say thanks but no thanks in not those exact words.

  14. So awesome that Thursday night went well. Your friend looks so happy…the cake looks delish! I will have to look for that TJ bread. Grits purist. So funny! I know I’ve already told you but we have next week too! I was out today for Dr appt and Trav is having surgery next week, so I will be out another day but I’m on the struggle bus…end of the year tired
