Monday, August 5, 2024 – The day I am a full time employee again!

Not to start out on a morose note, but this weekend it hit me that this is my first year not sending anyone “back to school” except for myself. I had realized this before, of course, but it really hit me. I was joking and saying that I was getting myself a new backpack (have wanted to for about 10 years and never did it) and new sneakers because I am the only one “needing supplies”.

Last week I worked 3 full days so I guess I eased myself back in?

Mason helped me set up my room and then his reward was any food he wanted. He picked First Watch and I took mine back to my room to keep working on the smaller things while he went home.

Friday I tried to live it up for my last summer weekday off and that included a very rare Starbucks skinny vanilla latte that I took to…

my hair appointment!

After that I shopped and ran a few errands – just enjoying the freedom!

That night my besties and hubs and Tom and I pulled a dinner together last minute at Mojito.

Of course I had a mojito!

Saturday morning was my favorite kind of Saturday morning. It was lightly raining and I loved it!

Little boy is so chill for me when I want him to be.

I finished this book this weekend and really liked it. Warning that the intimacy is quite explicit and also that these books are probably for someone much younger than me.

I started this. I just saw it on a library shelf and it looked good so we shall see!

We didn’t really have firm plans for Saturday but it was hot. Something freakish happened and my street lost power. I headed outside to read under the covered patio and realized it felt quite nice. So, I spent the powerless time reading!

Around 4:00 Tom and I had the most stereotypical American suburban date. We went to Costo and then to a steakhouse! Our reservation was for 5:00! We left at 5:40. Ha! He had a gift card left from Christmas to Stoney River.

I ordered the cutest little steak and biscuit things but really only ate the steak. It was so good and I am not a big steak person.

The next morning/yesterday look what I did:

Do you take leftovers home? We do and we try not to waste. Lately Mason has been eating all of our leftovers – usually late at night. He eats small portions but then gets hungry later. Both kids have always been kind of grazers.

I also went ahead and did some Greek bowl stuff for this week.

I enjoyed my Nespresso coffee on the patio and read some more.

What was the highlight of your weekend? Sometimes I wish I did something more exciting, but there’s a lot to be said for down time when you know you are heading into a busy season.

Amy

  1. Last year was the first year I had no one in school but me and it felt so weird! As this is Collin’s last year in grad school I’ll be right back there next August thinking the same thing – how did my kids grow up so fast??

We take all of our leftovers home too – my husband eats it all. Lots of times I order sides I know he likes so he can eat them the next day.

I hope this school year gets off to a great start and that the buses are not an issue!

Have a great day sweet friend!

  2. What a great few days. That’s so nice of Mason to help you out. Your dinners out look good too! Today is going to be rough. I’m already running around like a crazy person haha. Tomorrow, is a more flexible day, so I need to just get through today and take it a day at a time. Have a great Monday.

  3. I had a quiet weekend, but Vic started to demolish the deck. I remember that first year when Sophia didn’t need school supplies, it was a little sad. Your steak biscuits look yummy, great idea to doggie bag the biscuits for the next day.

  4. We have a Stoney River here too! I’ve only been there once, and it was for lunch with a friend who picked the restaurant. Don’t you love when plans get thrown together at the last minute and they turn out to be wonderful? That kind of happened to me on Friday; my bestie called me and asked me to do something. We were going to go out to eat, but I remembered that I needed to be here to prepare for bread baking on Saturday, so made a quick run to her son’s house, then we went to see my son’s new house, then we came back here to eat dinner and catch up. She stayed until 10:15! It was way past my bedtime, but it was such a fun and unexpected night, and I loved her being here. My boys got to see her too, which she always loves.

I’ll be thinking of you this week, my friend! Lots of love, and look at you meal prepping already. I know that makes it easier for you! I pray and hope that your week gets started off really well. Lots of love!

  5. Loved reading how you enjoyed the weekend before your school week. I think I ordered the same thing the one time I went to Stone River here. Those plantains look so good! Have a great day!

  6. I’m still in the lovely phase of not differentiating (is that a word!?) between weekend and weekdays… Well, cheaper lunches at the boat club Mon-Fri, but that’s it :D.

I have one university girl at home, otherwise I’m the only one still in school! I hope you bought that backpack!? Well, I have a new bag (TJMaxx) and new pencils (Walmart)! And a new calendar of course, I’m very old school with my paper calendar.

Come on, you did a lot of fun things during the weekend!

Good Luck with your school start!

  7. Mojito looks like my kind of place. I always feel a bit nostalgic in September. Not sure we ever completely get over that. Wishing you a wonderful school year!

  8. Those steak bites look tasty. I love steak but it has to be well-done and most people don’t think that counts.

Ha. We went to First Watch AND I got my hair cut in the same day last week.

    1. Same! I ordered these more done and the steak was so good!

      That’s funny!
Crazy question – did you submit a question for lazy genius? She mentioned a “kedarhower” on today’s podcast!

  9. I kinda miss the days of setting up my classroom. Our grade level had camping as a theme so we had all kinds of camping items. The only thing I really didn’t like doing were the bulletin boards! I don’t think my kids ever helped me set up my classroom as they seemed to always have something going on. I think you have the best relationships with your sons.

Mike had his left hip replaced last Tuesday so the weekend was spent trying to get him to walk and do his physical therapy. It’s all kind of a blur because I was getting up every three hours to give him his meds.

I hope you have a wonderful first week of school!

    1. I don’t really enjoy it! I am also not “extra” with it. I hate bulletin boards. I’m so bad. High school teachers don’t have to be as good! But, honestly, some classrooms are just so busy and distracting these days, I think.
      Aww, thank you!
Oh, man – you are tired from being Nurse Marsha.
I hope he is recovering well!

  10. It does feel strange when your kids are done with school! I felt very nostalgic the last time I packed my youngest one’s lunch box for his last day. But here I am still packing his lunch for the days he goes to work and uni, so he saves money, haha! The steak bites look delicious, and so does the mojito. Have a great week!

  11. I hope you have a great school year!! Our kiddos just went back yesterday and I wasn’t ready for it at all this year! I can’t believe it’s already that time.
