Today is actually a two post day! I wanted to hurry up and post my Back to School Tips as so many are heading back soon and now I am participating in Joyce’s Wednesday Hodgepodge for fun – because why not?
1. What is a childhood habit or preference you will never outgrow?
This is a really bad habit, but I love to read while I eat. I think it started with the back of the cereal box as a child. I also had my nose in a book during our many car trips. I had to share the back seat with two sisters and I had to tune them out.

2. Did you know July is beans month? What’s your favorite bean? Your favorite recipe that calls for beans? When it comes to chili are you team beans or team no beans?
I did not know that! I love green beans and all beans except for lima beans. My Dad loved beans and corn bread. He also made a white bean soup. Beans are great. They are very filling and good for you. I like beans in my chili for sure! Tom makes a 17 bean soup in the winter. He soaks the beans and the whole deal. I think my favorite beans are Great Northern beans.
3. Some historical figures have a tag line after their name, something like ‘the brave’ or ‘the wise’ or ‘the mad’…what would your tag line be? Explain why?
I don’t know – maybe something about loving to laugh or being silly? My sister’s kids say I bring the fun, which is really sweet and I would love to be remembered like that. Both of my sisters are really funny and my Dad loved to laugh. He told some Dad jokes, of course, but he is where we get our sense of humor, I’m sure.

4. The way to my heart is through small acts of service, kind words, or a little gift that shows someone really listened to me or really knows me. I love feeling seen.
5. The calendar rolls into August this week, but before we go give us four adjectives that describe your July.
July was fun, lazy, emotional (with my mom being in the hospital), stressful (same reason), short, and maybe not as hot as usual. I think I was able to sit outside more comfortably and walk more comfortably and not have to go as early in the morning.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I feel grateful for a summer to re-charge my batteries. I truly feel blessed that I got to be a teacher and have summers off! With that said, I’m always a little nervous about what the school year holds. I put pressure on myself to be the best I can be at both school and home and I still deeply need my alone time and my down time.
What would you add to my hodgepodge today?
Amy
Reading is definitely one habit I picked up in childhood that I don’t ever see myself dropping– I read while eating breakfast and lunch (but not dinner) and just about any time I am a passenger in the car. I do love green beans but I am not a fan of any other bean– which made going vegetarian really hard when I was in college. I mostly ate some because I knew they were good for me but I never really liked them. I hope you have a fabulous school year!

Yes and I am so happy I am a reader! How boring if I didn’t have that hobby! It might be a texture thing for you. One of my besties is the same.

I am so happy that I’m a reader, too! July was definitely short — I think that surely we were shorted a few days, right?

I don’t know what I would do without reading! Yes, it was, but at the same time I feel like a lot happened. Definitely!

I love that you bring the fun – that is a great way to be thought of and remembered! I’d hope for the same.
I don’t really read when I et but I can see how easy that would be; not too bad of a habit to have!

I mean – I hope people think that. My sisters joke that I bring the fun until I crash and need to go be alone!

Look at you go with 2 posts :)! I am not a bean eater, but that’s okay…I realize I am in the minority with that one. In addition to being fun, I would describe you as being very caring and compassionate the way you care for your family, friends and students. You seem to do a great job of balancing all the things, but I realize that takes intention and work. Have a good day!

I know! What’s wrong with me? Poor planning!
My bestie doesn’t eat beans and I don’t eat nuts.
Aww thank you. I do try but I miss the mark and sometimes am too into my own problems. Everyday is a chance to do better!

I’m glad I’m a reader too. My mom was a librarian so my whole family reads. My hubs has become quite the reader in retirement, not something he did much of in his work years. Wishing you a great school year!

I loved reading your answers today! I love that you get your sense of humor from your dad. I think that’s one of the greatest qualities in people, you know? I always pay attention to great personalities in people, and humor is an important one. I feel you on needing to feel seen; thoughtfulness is such a big deal!

Thank you! I love to laugh and that’s such a big part of my happiness. Humor makes people attractive to me. It really is! I love when I feel that someone knows me or paid attention.

I agree with your last one about summer to recharge. I am a reading eater, too! If I am eating alone, I feel like I need something to read no matter what!

I don’t like lima beans either! It came from childhood – my dad always made them and they made me feel so gross.

Going to the library as a kid was my favorite thing to do! I definitely want a book with me if I eat alone otherwise I like a cup of coffee or tea if I’m reading in the daytime. Also I want to say that it makes my heart so happy when I’m out and about or at the airport and see a kid reading a book in this day of phones and pads.
For me if it’s chili, it must have beans and green beans are my fav.

I can tell you are fun! 🙂 I love your answer for #4. I’m the same. I feel so grateful to have the summer off too and always feel anxious going back to school. For the second year, we have a new principal. I’ve heard nothing but good things but we adjusted a lot last year, so I’m not sure what this year will bring. Once we get in a routine, I feel better and enjoy the school year.

I used to read all the labels at the table – the cereal box, the ketchup bottle. Sending good thoughts for the new school year!

This is on my mind today: I felt older than the hills last night when my son (26) and I were talking about electronics and social media. I’m really glad I grew up before cell phones and social media were a thing. We played outside, did crafty projects (sprouting carrot tops and potato eyes, made corn husk dolls, dyed Queen Anne’s lace), went to the library to get books, learned how to cook and bake. I’m not saying it was a better time, but it was different, and I don’t think kids grew up as fast.

You reminded me that I do not like lima beans. My husband does. So I’ll make him a batch, and he eats on it for a few days.
A new school year is exciting. Wishing you the best.

You would think I have something against green food since I didn’t even remember green beans! 17 bean soup is sooo good. I haven’t made it in ages. I love being around people who like to have fun and laugh. Once upon a time I was a elementary school teacher and having summer off was such a bonus. Hope your new year and the kids you invest in will be present and challenged. Happy last day of July!

I didn’t even know there were 17 kinds of beans! My Grandma Rose used to make Great Northern Bean sandwiches with Hillbilly bread. I loved them! I agree they are the best kind of bean. I also read while I eat which is probably not a good thing since there are just the two of us. I think it’s wonderful your nieces say you bring the fun. That’s not a bad thing to be known for!

Loved your answer to the first question especially, since I do the same thing! I also read the cereal box as a kid if I didn’t have a book handy, and to this day if I’m eating by myself I have a book to read. Hope you’re having a great week!
