It’s a pretty big milestone in our country, right? My birthday is on November 2nd and I remember that my 21st fell on a Monday night. My friends accompanied me to Applebee’s! It was the bomb in the 90s. The year was 1992, to be exact. Potato skins, anyone? Spinach and artichoke pizza anyone?

So, my twins turn 21 in a couple of months. They are not excited about drinking alcohol – seriously – so I am looking for a fun way to celebrate them. Right now, my best idea is just a fancy dinner out where they can order a drink just because they can. Their birthday falls on a Tuesday so maybe they would want to do Mexican for Taco Tuesday?

I look like I’m in kindergarten, so I’m sure I was carded. I am the 2nd one from the end on the right. I wore a floral turtleneck? Or are those leaves for the fall? Oh my!

What did you do for your 21st?

What have you done for your kids?

Any ideas for mine?

Amy

  1. I don’t remember my 21st at all but I also couldn’t have cared less about drinking. My boys (so far anyway!) don’t seem like they’ll care much either.

  2. For. My oldest, we drove to visit him at college (about 2 hours away) and took him plus a group of his friends out for a late lunch. He chose Mexican. We bought lunch for about 8 college kids, a couple pitchers of margaritas for the table. I brought a cake from home and we light candles and all sang Happy Birthday to him in the restaurant. The waiters brought him a complementary tequila shot after that! It was a Sunday afternoon so even though we were there for several hours we weren’t holding up the table from other diners. College kids are especially grateful for free food, so it was a perfect way to celebrate his birthday.

  3. I don’t even remember what I did! Like really? Was it not a big deal? It should have been!!! When Nolan turned 21 he was away at school and went out with his roommates, we took Collin out for brunch and then he went to a bar that night with friends but he doesn’t really drink much so I think it was just a right of passage and no big deal to him.
I think a nice dinner out is a great idea!

  4. My sons always go out of town together for their 21st birthdays, so I’m guessing that’ll be the case when Jonah and Noah turn 21 in March of 2024. I love that they do that together! Graham and Drew both went to Nashville for their trips, but Todd has talked about them doing something together with a few of their friends and coming back to your area for part of the Bourbon Trail. I think this time they would stay closer to Bardestown.

    1. I love this, but I am selfish and want to be involved in one of the celebrations! Ha! I think if they like bourbon or think they will that sounds like a great idea. I would also impose myself upon the trip!

  5. This is awesome. I went to a bar with a friend but the security guard/bouncer made me wait until midnight to have a drink- can you believe it? Anyway, we enjoyed karaoke while we waited and complained about him- ha!

    1. We went to the one on Richmond Road a lot. In fact I could walk there with my roomie from our first after college apartment at 22! My roomie worked at a hotel nearby serving cocktails and a happy hour and we would go there first. I’m sure it’s not there anymore!
I never went to Chili’s though . I don’t think Lex had one.

  7. I was married to my first husband when i turned 21! And i have no idea what we did. Can’t remember so it must’ve not been memorable. Kelsey was at cal poly in San Luis Obispo and she went to the bars with her friends and my sister and i went in to the first bar and i took a pic of her ordering her first legal drink. 😂😂 then Tony and took her and her bestie to Las Vegas for a 3 night trip in the summer. For Taylor’s we went to Flemings in Fresno and had a great dinner and again i took a pic her getting carded and then we too her and a sorority sister to Vegas for 3 nights. Now they’re 34 and 30! Wow time flies.

  8. I honestly don’t remember what I did for my 21st birthday! Applebee’s…yes, that and Chili’s were so popular! As you probably saw on the blog, we did a quick overnight trip to San Antonio and went out to eat at a nice restaurant for Grace’s birthday. It made it feel special!

  9. My parents got me a limo for me and my friends for the night, and then we all stayed at a hotel downtown near the bars. It was a fun time! If your twins aren’t really into the drinking scene, then something low key like dinner out for Taco Tuesday would be fun!

  10. I was in the hospital after having a miscarriage for my 21st. Pretty sucky! I have never been a big drinker anyway because I’d rather spend my calories on french fries! I’m trying to think what happened with my kids because they were all away at college. My youngest and my husband went out for a beer. That’s when he discovered he’s more into mixed drinks than beer! Sorry for not having any ideas!

  11. When I turned 21 we went to Dave and Buster’s for dinner/games then headed to the bar my husband worked at that I’d been to a million times. We should’ve gone somewhere nicer, but I liked going somewhere familiar.

Maybe an escape room might be a good idea to do with your kids? We went for the first time this past year, and I was kind of worried about it being a dud, but the whole family had a great time.
