It’s Wednesday and that means Hodgepodge with Joyce!

1. On July 29th 1957 The Tonite Show premiered with Jack Parr as its host. This marked the beginning of the modern day talk show. Do you watch any daytime or late night talk shows today? Do you have any thoughts on the hubbub surrounding the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, or are you more in the camp of ‘who is Stephen Colbert?

I don’t watch any talk shows. I know who Stephen is but I haven’t followed the news surrounding the cancellation. I actually feel a bit released of knowing pop culture things since I have retired. As a high school teacher I always felt that I had to know what was going on in case it came up in class. It was part of my “professional development”. Most of the late night shows were always too late for me! Honestly, I think many of them are annoying. I don’t want to hear their voice or their fighting – The View. No thank you!

2. What’s the best part of your day?

I love the mornings. That first cup of coffee, seeing my puppy in the morning is a sweet thing, and if I can start my day outside that is super nice to me.

I also love my evening shower and being all clean and able to sit down at the end of the day.

3. What’s something your generation does that you actually dislike?

I’m not interested in long text conversations. I still like to talk on the phone. I also don’t like putting every single thing on social media. I only put things that make me smile or that I think will make someone else smile. I sometimes put things on Facebook for the memory pop up, but I am not a person who puts every thing out there. But, I do have a blog! Ha! I am such a hypocrite!

4. When you cook do you clean as you go, or clean it all up once you’re finished cooking? What’s the last thing you cooked/baked in your own kitchen?

A little of both. I like to start cooking with an empty/dirty dishwasher so I can load as I go but puppy loves the dishwasher so I have to be careful.

I cook something pretty much every day. I made sheet pan bacon for BLTS and sheet pan broccoli and then I also made half baked potatoes face down on butter and grated parmesan. They are so good this way!

5. Sum up your July in ten words or less.

Relaxed. I had a few pool days, a couple of boat days, a few happy hours, and our little trip to Michigan. I got a new to me car and we celebrated our anniversary.

When I look back on my camera roll, I had a lot of fun days. I also had lots of time at home, too.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I am so excited! Our weather forecast is looking so good!

I am sure there will be changes to this before it’s all said and done but low of 60 and high of 80?

What would you say about any of these topics?

  1. I don’t watch talk shows either and I had to google to find out who Stephen was; not that it helped much it just said he was the host of the show! LOL I don’t use social media either but I do love my blog.

  2. No talk shows for me either! I don’t like long text messages but I also don’t love talking on the phone, I’d rather talk in person but if that’s not possible and you have a lot to say then I’ll talk – ha!

  3. July was a great month for you! I love all that water time that you had; I’m sure you loved it as well. I can imagine that as time goes on, you’ll be more and more glad for certain things you don’t have to do anymore, like with the pop culture. I can totally see how you’d have had to know about all of that to stay relevant to teenagers. I’m super jealous of those temps! I’m ready for fall now!

  4. Wow! That is a fabulous forecast! You had such an amazing July- hope August is the same now that you don’t have to rush off to school again 🙂

  5. I wouldn’t win a current pop culture quiz : ) It’s one of the things that can make me feel a little old…hearing a name and having no idea who they are. Not that it matters lol. Our temps have come down here some too which is a relief. It’s been so hot and the air so thick. Have a great day!

  6. I, too, like to talk on the phone if it’s with a friend or loved one. I have become like the young and try to avoid the phone when dealing with a business or company- I much prefer to text or communicate via their website. We have that exact same weather pattern coming up. It seems almost hard to believe after this heat. I hope it’s true!!

  7. The thought of your mornings did make me smile.
I hate texting especially if the conversation could get long, I would much rather speak on the phone.
It looks like you had a lovely July!

  8. At the risk of sounding like I’m on a soap box, the Colbert thing is worth paying attention to.

I haven’t been in a pool in…2 years? 3 years? That sounds pretty good right now when it’s Satan’s bunghole degrees outside.

  9. There’s nothing better than the end of day shower and getting into pjs. I don’t love a group text…especially one with 10+ people because then someone is always chiming in. Stresses me out.
I run my dishwasher more because of you, lol
Instead of twice a week, I now run in about four times a week…& it’s the kids’ chore so they just love me. lol

  10. I loved reading your answers! I’m with you on not being a huge talk show watcher…I’d much rather have something cozy on in the background or a good worship playlist. And your July sounds like it was such a good one! It’s hard to believe how fast summer is flying by. I’m starting to get the tiniest itch for fall (pumpkins, football, cozy mornings!), but I’m still trying to soak up these last sunny days.

  11. While I didn’t watch Colbert, I’m more than a little concerned at the thought he was most likely cancelled due to a favor needed by the conglomerate that owned his station. I don’t like to text because I want immediate answers. I’d rather talk on the phone but not for long. I abhor group texts. Your weather looks wonderful. I know we’re due for a cool down, and I’m ready for it.

  13. I have heard of people cooking their potatoes that way but I haven’t tried them yet. It sounds delicious. Our temperature is back in the 80’s this weekend too, although in the mid 80’s, but it will be good to get outside again!
