It’s Wednesday Hodgepodge day with Joyce! How fun!
1. Monday was National Apple Day…did you eat an apple or enjoy something made with apples on Monday? Do you like apples? Do you prefer your apples raw, baked, or in cider? Do you have a favorite variety of apple?
Shoot! I did not! I meant to bring cut up apples and caramel dip to school but I forgot. I like my apples cut up and I prefer a light red variety – fuji, honeycrisp, something like that. I want to add more apples to my diet. I really do love them. I love cider and I love my apple cider sangria!

2. Do you think there’s any truth to the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Of the following healthy habits which do you find easiest to incorporate into your life and which is the most difficult for you to adopt-
adequate sleep, a balanced diet, plenty of water, eat breakfast, don’t smoke, exercise, limit alcohol, include fruits and vegetables in your diet, manage stress, limit screen time
I do. I think our food is medicine. I think as a high school teacher it’s hardest for me to get enough sleep and water and exercise.
3. Who taught you how to drive? Do you enjoy driving? Would you rather be the driver or the passenger? Do you have a favorite scenic drive near you?
My Dad taught me at 14 on an automatic. My first car at 16 was a stick and that was a whole other story. I finally had to put in the practice and “teach myself” on country roads with my sister Kate (younger and no help – just along for the ride). I remember us rolling backwards on a hill. I also remember getting stuck in my dear neighbor Terry’s (Terry is such a special person to my adolescence – she moved in as a 22 year old new mom with her husband and son and was 12 years old than me. I babysat all of her kids and she loved me and doted on me) driveway and she having to back up the car. Lol!
4. What small habit has had a big impact on your life?
I guess getting up early before my kids since they were little. This quiet time has made me a better mom and a better person. I don’t have to rush into my day, but I can ease in calmly.
5. Tell us about something nice that happened to you recently.
I guess it would be a sweet kid telling me my class is his favorite and how funny he thinks I am. I guess I still got it – lol. But, seriously, it’s hard to be the older and not so cool teacher sometimes.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I ran into a former student on Sunday who is now a new teacher and I gave her the advice to keep a work/life balance, limit when you check emails, enjoy your weekends, and all the things that it took me way too long to learn!
That was fun! Thanks, Joyce!
Amy
Oh I can imagine your class being a favorite and how funny you are-can totally see that all in this blog- those kids are very lucky!

Thank you for saying that. Not always, but I try!

I teach college and a bunch of students apparently emailed me Sunday night about an assignment and I told them that a last minute decision on their part does not necessitate an emergency on mine. And besides, I don’t check email on the weekends!

Yes!!!!
I had a girl email me Saturday night about a project due Monday that she has had info on for 2 weeks. I told her Monday I don’t check email on weekends and gave her the info then.
I think many teachers are at their beck and call and it has created monsters!

Right; it’s only because some teacher do that that kids think it’s ok. I tell them straight up, my weekends are mine.

I agree with what you said about food being like medicine; I essentially said the same thing in my post. That was sweet of your student to tell you that! I also love that you gave a young teacher your advice; I’m sure she appreciated that. I’m sure you’re still cool most of the time! But I do also understand about how you feel like one of the older, uncool teachers; it’s just because you’ve been at it for so long. I know your influence is still important and its reach far as you continue in this year after year. I hope you have a great day today!

I’m sure kids enjoy your class and humor. It’s hard to escape technology. We have to make a conscious effort not to look at mail as soon as it fills the box. I think when people text they want an immediate response and I’m not always good about that. Life is mostly not an emergency. Enjoy your day!

That is such good advice for someone who is getting their career started in any field. How sweet of your student to say that! I am impressed by people who can drive a manual car. I never learned to do that.

I love honeycrisp and granny smith apples. I think I always prefer a tart apple to a sweeter one. Ome of my best habits is showering at night. I started doing this when my kids were babies. I can’t stand going to bed dirty!

I love granny Smith apples!! I am a veteran teacher, and it does make me feel special when someone still thinks I am funny and enjoys my class!

I used to purposely dehydrate myself while teaching so I didn’t have to worry about having to go to the bathroom during the day! It was much too hard to find coverage for the class and teaching in elementary/pre-school it’s just not an option to step out.
The first car I bought was a standard and I basically learned on my way to and from college each day… I still remember stalling in the middle of city on a drive home during rush hour traffic (but it never happened again!).

yes and then try to make up for it in the few hours after school before bed. i never left my class until post-pandemic and now i just go when i have to. i have certain classes i really trust and just say i will be right back.
That makes sense – you just have to do it to learn.

I might try your apple cider sangria for Halloween this year. It sounds delicious! I agree that getting up before everyone helps my day so much calmer! Kids do say the nicest things. I had a kid proclaim with a slight surprise today that I was young because I wasn’t alive when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. While I agreed with him, I was not thrilled about the surprise in his voice. Ha! 3rd graders will say whatever crosses their mind. Have a great day!

Do it! it’s like fall in a cup – I think that is a Kellyann quote.
They really make you chuckle all day long!

I do love apples but only when they’re really crisp. I just can’t eat them when they get mealy. My favorites are Red Delicious, but I can’t find them anywhere. My husband taught me to drive a manual. I can drive four on the floor and three on the tree! I actually really like to drive manual cars. I think that you underestimate yourself when it comes to being a “cool” teacher! My guess is you have influenced many students over the years and will continue to be cool to them!

Same. i can’t eat a gross one. Oh, that’s sweet.
Well, you are too kind to say that. As I approach the end of my career I do think more about that.
