Tuesday is usually my least favorite day of the week because of after school meetings and it just makes for a long day. Tomorrow will be my least fave this week because they are taking my planning period and I have an after school meeting! I usually love Wednesdays!

Also, Tom never has to travel for work but this week he is traveling to Dallas for a training. His bestie Eddie Otis will really miss him. Mason has committed to helping extra with him.

There’s nothing like travel to make you appreciate home. We loved the tap water in Madrid but in Barcelona it was bad. We are very proud of our tap water here in Louisville, KY and it is so nice to have water, water everywhere in the US! Have you seen the memes about how to tell someone is American in Europe by their water bottle? Are we now the most hydrated population?

I’ll say that teens today are super hydrated with their emotional support water bottles. They are constantly asking to go to the restroom. Did you even have a drink of water in high school? I drank nothing in the morning but my Golden Grahams or Honey Nut Cheerios milk, then had a white milk at lunch, and then I think I went to one water fountain by my English class in the afternoon.

I missed my patio for sure. Yes, I know you are tired of hearing about it, but hear me out. For your next birthday, ask for lights to be put up somewhere. I have been asking Alexa to turn these on each morning and it has made me so happy.

Even my students are tired of hearing about my patio. After only four weeks of school, this funny kid commented on how I always say in Spanish I read on my patio when we talk about the weekend. He jokingly asked what was so great about my patio and I showed him a pic and he was indeed impressed.

I also missed cooking!

I made chili last week and we all loved it. Yes, we put macaroni noodles in (keep them on the side and don’t use too many) and we like Fritos corn chips or Scoops.

I also missed my grab and go breakfast sandwiches and made some Sunday morning to help me out during the week.

I am not part of the sourdough sorority. My starter failed. But, I make a mean no knead bread, I think.

I wanted to make this for a friend and used this recipe.

Last week we had another meeting that could have been an email, but at least they bribed us with this candy corn salted peanut combo;

I have been super productive at work lately. I keep a running list of things i need to do and re-write and cross things off to get that high after accomplishing something! We have just a couple of weeks until our next long weekend. The kids are off Monday before Election Day and the Tuesday of Election Day. Teachers have a teacher day on the Monday. This month is really flying.

This week is going to be the coldest we have had! I have salmon, chicken alfredo, and potato soup on the menu.

Are you excited for colder weather? Let’s see how much I can walk to school as it gets colder!

Thanks for reading my This and That!

  1. I am not excited for the colder weather at all. If I could stop the seasons from changing and just keep the weather we’ve had these past two weeks it would be perfect! I honestly don’t remember eating or drinking anything at school when I was in high school.

  2. Hey amy. I have a Spanish question. My son took 3 years of French in high school and really struggled and didn’t like it. For college he decide to switch to Spanish thinking a fresh start to language may be better. He is now a freshman taking beginner Spanish and is still struggling. I think language just may not be his thing. He has three more semesters of it. He makes great grades in his other classes and I just can’t figure out why this is so hard for him. He says the teacher speaks the entire class in Spanish including intructions. Is that pretty typical for beginner class? Any tips or resources you can offer? Feel free to email me. Thank you!

    1. oh man! i feel for him. i tell kids not to change languages in college bc the professor assumes they have had it and they tend to be experts in their subject but don’t know how to teach like high school teachers do (usually).
Is this a requirement? I would recommend for him to get a student to help him who had it in hs. that is an ego thing for many teachers but you aren’t meeting kids where they are and if all goes over their head you aren’t doing your job. I can see that being more so in college. my best college spanish professor had been a high school teacher.
he can go to the professor’s office hours, too. i hate this for him – it’s not him!
his french will give him the basics of language and conjugation but it also could be confusing him since he didn’t love it and only had 3 years.
i am sorry i am not much help and my shift key is not working.

  3. It’s amazing we didn’t die of dehydration as kids – honestly, I never remember drinking water aside from a sip here or there from the water fountain!

One of my favorite features of my back patio is the lighting! Throw some lights up and any space is amazing!

I can totally relate to appreciating being home. When we got back from our trip in March I was so happy, the mundane, day to day events were welcomed with new appreciation.

  4. Do Europeans not carry around drinks? I would almost think they would do this more than us, since they’re probably better about not buying so many things in plastic or by not using plastic bags like we have. Regardless, that made me laugh. Why do we all do this? I do think it’s good that we’re all drinking more water now, especially when we have great drinking water from our tap. We feel the same about our water in Memphis that you do in Louisville. I’m so grateful for this! I agree about there being no place like home. It’s fun to travel, but coming home is always the sweetest, in my opinion. Have a great Tuesday!

  7. i too have an emotional water bottle! I can’t leave home without it. Crazy 🤪 living in California— i am sooooo ready for colder weather. It’s finally dropping to the 80’s here and 70’s possibly too. Thank goodness!!

  8. We have hit record highs yesterday and today – 96! So yes, I am ready for cooler weather. I didn’t notice the Barcelona water, but really only drank a little to take medicine. We always joke that Dallas water tastes better than our Houston water. Hope you get through the teacher meetings etc. Ugh!

  9. Ugh…meetings that should have and could have been emails were the bane of my teaching career! Especially when you either already knew it or didn’t need to know it. We have horrible water here. We don’t drink the tap water at all. We use the filtered water out of the refrigerator, and I’ve even thought about getting a Brita pitcher to further filter it. If I have to wash something white, I take it to my daughter’s house because it will come out dingy and greyish/brown. It has to be the grossest thing ever. And, no, I didn’t ever drink at school…not even when I was teaching (hahaha). I did have a large insulated cup I filled with ice water with a dash of Crystal Light lemonade to give it a bit of flavor. I would drink from that throughout the day when I was teaching. My students did have water bottles because our building wasn’t air conditioned for most of my teaching career.

I’m looking forward to cooler weather because I just love to be all cozy and snuggled up under the covers. I don’t like to be hot at all. Our patio will look forlorn, though, because the plants will all be gone. We stack the furniture and cover it for the winter, too. It’s pretty sad.

  10. I don’t remember drinking water in school, including college! It’s crazy to think about that. Memphis is known for its clean drinking water, so I drink from the tap here too. I am so loving the cooler weather. I am ready for it. I just need a little fall before we jump straight into winter :). Your bread looks great!
