Happy Hump Day! I am linking up with Joyce for her Wednesday Hodgepodge today!

1. It’s officially fall y’all…in the northern hemisphere anyway. What are three of your favorite things about this particular season of the year?

The clothes – It’s a little too soon for sweaters around here, but a light cardigan over a top is about right. I love that sweet spot when you don’t need a jacket yet. But, I do love jackets. I probably need an upgrade in that department.

The fall foods – I am excited to have a pot of soup or chili simmering away. I love pumpkin foods, too.

Mother Nature – I love seeing how she shows off in the fall. It’s such a great time for taking walks and being outside.

2. Your favorite fall fabric-denim, flannel, tweed, corduroy, tartan, polar fleece, leather? Do you own something made with your favorite fall fabric?

Gosh, all of these sound very hot right now. I am very picky about my fabrics. I won’t wear anything that isn’t breathable. I will have to say denim. I love worn in, soft denim. I do have my two beloved pairs of faux leather pants from Chico’s too. I won’t wear anything scratchy and I am trying to get away from cheaper pieces that are synthetic, I guess.

3. According to Everyday Health here are ten healthy fall foods- apples (flavonoids may improve brain health), pears (for heart friendly fiber), cranberries (helps your body fight oxidative stress) winter squash (for eye health), pumpkin (another great source of Vitamin A), leeks (an anti-inflammatory food), brussel sprouts (full of fiber and anti-oxidants), sweet potatoes (loaded with Vit A and C), parsnips (keep your bones healthy with Vit K), and broccoli (may help prevent cancer).

How many on the list do you eat on a regular basis? Which one is your favorite? Which one gets a big no thanks from you?

I eat broccoli and brussels sprouts on a regular basis and need to do better with all the other things on the list. I do love them all. I am more likely to eat an apple that is cut up. I want to cook with leeks and parsnips more. I think I will snap a pic of this list and look for recipes!

4. Tell us about the last time (or a recent time) you experienced a wave of nostalgia?

I would say probably when a Facebook memory pops up. I have a love/hate relationship with these memories! I love them but they also make me nostalgic. They also made me glad I posted them.

5. Sept. 22nd was National Daughter’s Day. Like mother, like daughter…does this idiom ring true for you? You may answer in terms of your own role as a daughter or, if you have daughters, then your role as a mother of daughters.

I think it’s hard not to be like your parents in some ways! I always think it’s fun to meet students’ parents and I usually think “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”. Also, I never know when it’s these “national ___ day”.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I am really in a cooking rut, so I think it will be nice to make some fall foods soon. I will definitely make chili and maybe lasagna soup? I love roasted vegetables, too!

What about you? Anything from the Hodgepodge you would share?

Amy

  1. Even though I am up here in New England, it has been too warm for true fall clothing here too! We haven’t started the soups yet either but they are some of my fave fall foods

  2. I hope to make a big pot of soup soon; it’s been too warm here for it, honestly. I have actually been cooking this week, which is shocking. I made us steaks with potatoes Monday night, and last night I made hamburger steaks with gravy and rice (for me) and mac and cheese for Jonah. I bought him a buffalo chicken calzone for tonight if he wants, and I’m doing something with chicken tomorrow. I’m certain this cooking trend won’t last, but I’m trying to do better since I’ve barely cooked since June. I also made him brownies, which are his favorite.

On a lighter note, I really want some faux leather leggings. I need to research on where the best ones are found!

  3. I love your list! I agree, I have a love/hate relationship with these memory photos that pop up all the time. I never know when a “national day of whatever” is either. Who comes up with this stuff I wonder? Chili and lasagna soup will be made at some point here this fall/winter. I hope to start making soups next week. Have a good day!

  4. My mom and I are so much alike it’s crazy; we often even say the same things the same time. Off that list brussel sprouts are the only veggie I don’t/wont eat!

  5. Beautiful tree photo! I love brussel sprouts and broccoli too.
I started making a monthly menu plan so I’m about to start working on Octobers. I keep a board on Pinterest of ideas I want to try and another of recipes we like (plus another for crock pot recipes). The menu changes and things shift around but it has been a good guide for me and helps me in many ways.

    Nice to visit you today.

  6. It was so warm when we left SC, but it’s plenty fall like here in the UK. I would like to try some new fall recipes with some of these foods too. I get in a rut with cooking and the changing seasons inspire me to pull out the cookbooks. I enjoyed your post about reaching out too…the one before this one I think. I’m traveling so not getting around to commenting, but there was lots of wisdom in that post.

  7. I’m not sure we’ll see the trees turning here. It’s been so dry that I think most trees are going to just drop their leaves. I do love soup simmering in the crock pot. I need to find some new recipes, too. Oh, I do love Facebook Memories. Some of them are so silly…remember when you just played games on it? Others break my heart because the person is gone. So, yeah, they are bittersweet.

  8. I can’t wait for the temps to stay cool…because then I feel like I can make chili and soups more often. I made chili on Monday and we had chili dogs and then leftovers on Tuesday. It hit the spot.

  9. Still summer weather here in So CA. I love to make soups, and I have never added leeks before, so maybe I will try that. I like soft clothes too and dress in layers. I am so happy to be retired and not have to worry about what to wear on a daily basis.
