This tip actually comes from my sister Kate! Even though the first 6 weeks of school are exhausting, I have been doing a really good job with this personally.

My instinct is to go home on Friday and hibernate. Well, I do enjoy going to happy hour first. And, that may be enough for me on many Fridays. This is also a nice compromise for me wanting to be social and Tom being fine with going home after he gets off work.

I will either go to happy hour right after school and bring food home for dinner or we order something. We have also used Friday night as a good night to clean out leftovers. And, if I have a snack at happy hour I sometimes don’t even need anything or much of anything.

Another idea is to happy hour with the girls and then have the husbands meet up for dinner at the same place. I have done that, too.

But the point is to maximize your weekend!

My sister says that she feels that she makes more of the weekend if she does something on Friday night. I have to agree with her. I think it sets a tone for “my weekend is not just about productivity and recovering from the week”.

I also like to think of the weekend as 5 parts:

Friday afternoon/evening

Saturday morning until afternoon

Saturday afternoon/evening

Sunday morning until afternoon

Sunday afternoon/evening

If you plan one thing in each of the 5 parts you will feel like you made more of the weekend!

I’m always glad I do something on Sunday, too. It helps you not to just focus on the week ahead.

What do you think? Do you do this?

  1. I don’t do this but I should. I tend to come home and just relax in our backyard/read a book in bed. Friday nights I usually need a quieter night after all the loud at school.

  2. Sometimes I do this very well and others not so much. I do feel that when I take the time to make some plans I am always so much happier at the end of the weekend! A good happy hour is a nice way to kick things off!

    1. It requires work and honestly I am not always the one doing the work. We just happened to get asked out on a couple of recent Fridays. Happy hour feels like a treat now since I can really only easily do it on Friday.

  3. I love thinking about the weekend I’m five parts! My desire is to come home on Friday and not come back out 😂but I know what you mean about doing something on Friday night. I never regret it

  4. I love this! The Lazy Genius podcast yesterday mentioned about taking time for rest, which I really liked and need to do better. I like that you start your weekend off with a friend and start relaxing your mind. I know so much is on your mind after a week at school with students. I am always happy when I know I have some plans for a Friday night. Wish we lived closer and I would join for a happy hour!

  5. I totally see how this would help you get your weekend started. I think it’s especially important in the months when it gets dark so early, since the tendency is to be reclusive then (at least for me). I’m already dreading those months, so I’m going to have to work to make them as much fun as any other time of year. I have been trying to have plans every weekend night recently, but this weekend didn’t work out that way, unfortunately. I love thinking of my weekend in parts like that as well, and all of them usually look different; mine starts with Friday from ten-afternoon, so I always have six parts to my weekends. I’m surprised that I love my Fridays without my Dad; but also, maybe that’s why I have to do something. Thanks for sharing this fun post!

  6. I love weekends! It’s the one time that my family are mostly all at home and we have time to relax unless we make plans. My youngest isn’t at college on a Friday so my weekend starts then and yes, I think of a weekend having 5 parts too!

  7. it’s probably because i don’t work outside of the home but Friday nights for us is homemade pizza – Jammie’s on early- watch TV for us kind of night. Saturdays are always a movie in the afternoon and Sundays are always golf days. I usually cook dinner 5-6 nights a week and Sundays are always dinner out. Weekends at the coast house are the only exceptions to that !!

  8. This is really great to divide the weekend that way. Our kids are small (4 and 6) so a lot of it is “survival” But maybe, maybe I can incorporate more of anchors so that the weekends don’t just fly by.

Friday afternoon/evening: me: happy hour after work or stop by Barnes and Noble to read/have tea

Saturday morning until afternoon: kids’ activities; me-yoga @studio

Saturday afternoon/evening: dinner out or takeout for everyone

Sunday morning until afternoon: yoga + prep for the upcoming week

Sunday afternoon/evening: a movie, early bed time, for everyone.

  9. I don’t do this either but mostly because I feel like so much of my planning depends on my husband and he works most Saturdays which often throws a wrench into any Friday night plans because he has to be up early on Saturday (then most of Saturday itself is shot too since it’s usually afternoon by the time he gets home).

  10. Oh, I needed this when I was teaching! I always said Thursday was the best night of the week because it was the night before Friday! I like the idea of dividing up the weekend into parts and scheduling different things for that. Maybe once my husband is walking again…

  11. It’s a great idea to divide the weekend like that! Since I’m part time we always start the weekend with a nice Friday lunch somewhere, that sets the tone for the weekend! I love happy hours! Unfortunately it’s not a thing over here… But it’s such a perfect way to meet up with friends!

  12. I was just considering texting a friend about having a Friday night drink! Maybe this is my sign.

I’m curious when you do happy hour with a friend and then the husbands join, do you get a table for four during happy hour? Or do you sit at the bar and then get a table when they are on the way?

    1. I hope you did it! Sorry I’m late with my comments!
That’s a good question. Sometimes a table for four. At happy hour time they don’t mind giving you a table for four. I also am really into sitting at a bar lately. I think it really depends on the place.
