One of the mysteries of life is how I can feel like I have so much more to wear when I have a smaller wardrobe. It’s crazy, right?
The change of seasons is a perfect time to do a closet clean out. If I am not excited to put something into the rotation from last spring, it probably needs to go. I also think a mid-season assessment is good to do as well. Maybe I will put that on my calendar to do in about a month when I see what I have been wearing.
One of my spring break projects was a good closet clean out. In fact, I told myself I could do NO SHOPPING until this happened.
So, my closet wasn’t horrible, but It wasn’t great, either.

Here is my approach:
Head to my closet with a couple of bags. One can be for re-sell and one can be for donate.
Here are the questions I ask myself:

Do I want to waste one of my amazing hangers on this item?
Would I buy this item today?
Does this item bring me joy?
Does this item still fit my style aesthetic? And, does it still fit me the way I would like it to fit?
Do I feel good when I wear this?
Does this item have pilling, stains, tears, or anything else that would make me look like a ragamuffin?
Am I holding onto this because it was expensive or given to me?
Here is what I did:

I put all the toppers on the right – so kimonos, light spring sweaters, and blazers.
To the left I put the short sleeve blouses together and by color and the long sleeve blouses together and by color.

The bottom is t-shirts, graphic tees, things that go under things, and things I am thinking of trying to wear soon to see if they work.
My skirts, pants, and dresses were already pretty organized and curated.
Here are the shoes I wear in spring:

I do need to go through all my summer sandals and see what I still love.
I feel so much better!
Now I do keep a smaller bag in my closet at all times for donations when I try to wear something and it doesn’t work.
What’s the state of your closet right now?
Amy
I just went through this weekend and put away a few totes of my heaviest sweaters and pulled out all my spring tops but anything sleeveless, my shorts, my capri pants, and sundresses are still packed away for at least another month I’m sure. I tend to purge at the end of the season when I’m packing away but I don’t get rid of anything I’m taking out of storage until I’ve worn it at least once.

Good idea! Yes, I have transitional season clothes. We are getting a cold front tomorrow after 70s for 5 days. So, I need some heavier things that are in springy colors.

It’s that time of year for me too – I need to go through my closet and edit, edit, edit. It feels so much better when I have fewer clothes.

I need to deep clean in my closet. It’s bad! I don’t think it’s about just the clothes, but it’s just messy. This was a perfect spring break project!

I have found that I only want to buy a few quality pieces and have less and be content than a closet full of clothes that I rarely wear.βI am excited for an updated puppy post.βI have read two are better than one.β

I need to the same in my closet. Since I love thrifting I end up with a lot of clothes that I may or may not love. I really need to try on my shorts to see if they still fit! Thanks for the motivation!

It can be so much work and you have to be in the mindset. Yes, that happened to me when I first started my consignment shopping hard core. Now I am definitely more discriminating. I tried on my first pair of cut offs and luckily they did fit, but they were snug!

A mid-season cleanout is smart. I usually get rid of clothes as I wear them if they aren’t right.βHowever, I need to do a better job looking at the clothes I don’t wear. I love your pink and green adidas shoes. They are so perfectly spring!

I agree – once you get your footing on the new season and what you actually are wearing! Thank you! They have made me happy!

Thank you for your kind email. I love consignment shopping and yes, do a closet clean out at least twice a year and usually am always open to getting rid of items. Agree on is is worn, does it fit my aesthetic. I think after the pandemic and turning 50 I got rid of a lot of items as not who I am anymore. With the much more casual dress at work I got rid of a lot. I still have a lot as we have 150 degree temp change in a 6 month period. It is exhausting. We had snow yesterday, today and more tomorrow. 50βs by weekend. I am going to get rid of snow boots. Way too many and wear 2-4 most of the time.
Divorce is so hard and after over 33 years together just devastating. To make my year even crappier, I got laid off yesterday and not an Aprilβs fool joke. Just not what I needed.
