Have you always thought about baking bread? I love the book Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist. She really gets you excited about cooking for your people! My friend Tanya at The Other Side of the Road blog posted this recipe from http://www.homegrowntraditions.com and I am here to tell you that I have made it twice and plan to make it until my supplies run out. I had trouble finding flour at the grocery about a week ago. A tip is to try Walgreen’s or CVS because they have baking supplies. Of course, try not to go out if you can help it and you may already have these items at home.

Here we go!

You need:

3 cups all purpose flour

2 tsp. active dry yeast (this is not quite a full packet of yeast if you buy it by the packet)

1 tsp. kosher salt

1 and 1/2 cups warm water

Mix together with a wooden spoon and over with a tea towel or plastic wrap for 2 hours

After two hours preheat oven to 450

Place a pyrex dish with water in the oven (I forgot one time and it didn’t matter so I will probably skip this step)

Shape your dough into two round loaves and score the top with a knife (Simply make slits in the dough)

I had to add more flour to be able to work with my dough but I found it very relaxing.

Bake for 18-20 minutes.

It really is best eaten right away. Thank you Tanya and Homegrown Traditions!

  1. A Saturday post, what a treat! I’m a beginner at baking, but I will definitely try this.
Sweden is ok, everything but the school is shut down, and people are starting to wonder; what’s next!? Financial experts warn about massive unemployment and inflation… Scary!
    Take care!

      1. We’re in the cabin, but actually drove to Ikea today, we really had to exchange something important… I wear my gloves all the time out in public, even though I’m not that scared to be infected. Ikea was quite crowded actually!

      2. I wore gloves one day and then put in wash immediately! I bet everyone had same idea to get out and get IKEA stuff! Enjoy the cabin! Baking bread there I hope!

  2. The only flour I could find this week was self rising which makes really good beer bread. And there is plenty of beer to be found! I have enough all purpose flour to try this recipe and plan to make some chili tonight and this will be great with it! Thanks! I will also check out Tanya’s blog.
We did a date night last night and got carry out from our favorite local pub. We ate in our car and then went to the grocery store so my husband could see first hand the empty shelves!
    Have a wonderful Saturday!

    1. There was not much flour on my shelf either! Beer bread sounds great! I went through my cookbooks yesterday and it was fun! I texted a couple of people who gave a couple of them to me, too!
I hope you like the bread with your chili – it’s a cold day here!
That sounds like a fun date and you sound like you are in better spirits!

  3. This looks delicious! I have made bread with beer instead of yeast, it is pretty good! I am out of flour, hoping to find some maybe tomorrow. Be well, I am glad you are still blogging!

  4. Congrats on your 500th post! That is a pretty big milestone!
I don’t bake too much since there are just 2 of us, even sharing with my neighbor there is always too much. I usually keep the Take and Bake French rolls in the freezer when we want a little treat. I also have a box or 2 of the Jiffy cornbread on hand which I like to have with chili and it is a great size for us. That said, with all the extra time and if I can get my hands on some yeast I wouldn’t mind trying a sweet bread for Easter.
On another note, I read a good book in 2 days this week called In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
    Have a great day,
    Nancy

    1. I understand – and right now we aren’t even supposed to share with others! Those rolls are great and Jiffy is cheap and good! It doesn’t even seem close to Easter around here. I noticed some plastic eggs hanging from a neighbor’s tree and did a double take. It is so sad. I have heard of that book can’t read anything depressing right now! I will check it out. Our local bookstore is delivering and I would like to support them.
